Learn the real technique
Love cake is one of the great Burgher kitchen skills — dense, spiced, rosewater-scented, and surprisingly easy to get wrong without the technique. In this live online session, you’ll learn how it’s really made and hear the history of the Burghers and their place in Australia, mixing your batter alongside us — then finish baking it yourself once we’re done.
Who it’s for. Anyone who wants a hands-on taste of Burgher culture in a short session — beginners welcome. Bring your own ingredients (a shopping list is sent beforehand).
About love cake
Love cake, or Bolo di Amor, arrived with the Portuguese and became something uniquely Sri Lankan — dense, spiced, rosewater-scented, and traditionally a labour of love, ground by hand for someone who mattered. It’s been our family’s Christmas and celebration cake for generations, and it’s the one thing almost every Burgher family has their own version of.
What you’ll do
A short history
Who the Burghers are, and the Burgher-Australian story.
The technique, live and hands-on
Toasting semolina, folding egg whites, the rosewater and cashew balance, following along in your own kitchen.
Mix and prep together
Get your batter ready before the call ends.
Put it in the oven together
Then finish baking after class, using the timing and notes we give you.
You’ll leave with the real technique (not just the recipe), a batter ready to bake, and a working knowledge of Burgher history. A recipe card is provided.

You’ll bake a full cake at home from the batter you prepare during the class.

We mix and prepare together live — you’ll finish baking afterward, since love cake takes over an hour in the oven.
